Up early-ish and then walk into town to collect the car. There it was waiting at the rental agency, all good, that’s how renting a car should work.
On the road and heading out of town by 10am. Today’s trip was to walk up a volcano, Volcano Osorno. The weather was good so we could see it from Puerto Varas and driving.
Our map suggested that there was a road off the main road that it was dirt and went up the volcano a bit. It is now sealed and took us up to 1300m and above tree line.
Then there was a chairlift with took us to 1400m.
We walked up for a bit too, so I think we would probably have ended up around 1500m. The volcano is only 2620m. We headed in the opposite direction of the tour bus that had just arrived, they only had 1 hour on the hill and all walked to exactly the same spot. Why? Follow the leader? We ended up spending 3 hours on the volcano.
The volcano is still classed as active and there is steam coming out of the ground all around you and the ground is warm. We found a nice spot with views of the lake (Lago Llanquihue), volcano and surrounding mountains and had lunch. We’d stopped off at the supermarket on the way out and picked up some stuff for lunch (bread roll, roast chicken, camembert cheese, eggplant tapenade, pear and a bottle of red wine).
So we had a nice long relaxing lunch. However the mist came in and we couldn’t see much for most of lunch, but it was quiet and quite surreal.
After lunch we headed off in another direction. After descending about 20m, the mist disappeared and the top of the volcano reappeared, along with the other mountains and lakes.
We had a fantastic time, it is a quite stunning and exciting place to see and experience.
We then went for a drive around to Lago todos los Santos. It is a quiet and pretty lake that is a beautiful green colour.
This is the lake we were trying to kayak on, we are still happy with our decision not to do that. A short walk along the lakeside and then we headed back to Puerto Varas.
We found a nice quiet spot and parked the car and just sat and looked for a while. There was one bloke who was fly fishing, but he caught nothing.
Dropped the car off around 17:30 and then headed back to our hotel.
A very successful and relaxing day. Dinner at the local pub down the road.
