After a wonderful and desperately needed night’s sleep, we toddled off to catch a tourist bus to Puno on Lake Titicaca (I was excited about seeing Monkey, Pigsy and Sandy until I worked out that it was Tripitaca I was thinking of). The tourist bus takes 10 hours to go the 350kms, with a loud annoying woman talking for most of it. She does say a few interesting things, but it’s muffled in so much inane bullshit that you try and tune out. Not an easy task with the P.A. at full bore. There is no escape at the stops either as she guides you around for in the entire time and then tells you only have 10 minutes to actually look at the sight.
We wandered off when she started yelling about chatric (sp?) energy and showing pictures of herself worshiping a giant phallus. Stops included an incredibly ornate baroque church, an old Inca ruin with an impressively large wall and some round storage huts and a not bad lunch stop.
It would have been quite good if she’d shut up for more than 5 minutes. A quite sprint around Puno to stretch limbs, drop of the laundry and locate the supermarket before dinner with the rest of the group (we normally chose to have some personal time). Puno seems nice at first glance, and whilst touristy it seems to have other functions as well, so there are proper markets and shops, not just endless rows of places selling the same pots and alpaca products.
