As we got in late yesterday, we went for a decent stroll around the old city section of Sibiu.
The destination for today was the famous Transfagarasian Road (described by Top Gear as one of the best driving roads in the world). The aim was to do this then have a late lunch and a lazy afternoon in Curtea De Arges at the base of the road. It all started fine as we wound our shitty little car up the steep climb (technically the road, but not the fun bit). It was really pretty with snow on the peaks just above us and we were the only car on the road. Then just below the pass there was a sign saying the road was closed. Oh bugger. It really was closed too, with big concrete barriers and a boulder across it.
Not left with much choice we turned the car around and retraced our steps 60km’s and went the long way round. This was horrible windy single lane road jam packed with trucks and cars. We must have averaged 50km/hr for the trip at best. By the time we finally got in at 4 o’clock I was buggered from concentrating and hugely frustrated. Fortunately our hotel was beautiful, and the town quite pretty. A couple of beers helped. We did technically do part of the drive, but just the really crap bumpy bit.
