Into Bolivia

Wednesday 25 April 2012

A transit day today as we head into Bolivia. I think I’m much more excited about Bolivia than the hard worn tourist cities of Peru. After a couple of hours to the border with one quick stop to look down the long axis of the lake (not that exciting, but quite long) we hit the border to ditch that bus and jump on another on the other side.

We then went through to Tiwanaku to have lunch (yummy llama) and visit the ruins of the same name. The Tiwanaku empire was apparently wiped out when the local volcano rumbled and caused a tidal wave in the lake adjoining the city. Rather effective when everything is made of mud. They are still picking the structures left out of the mud.

Nice to see an older culture than the Inca’s and see where the headquarters of a culture we’d seen in Arica and San Pedro in Chile. As with every guide, there was tall bullshit tales that some scientist had “proven” (this happens all the time when some nutter writes a book, not too many journal articles here). They also had wild guinea pigs on site (happily digging holes all through the temple) which are a greeney brown colour as opposed to your usual pig which are used for domestic purposes, and a rather pretty little snake.

From here it was about an hour to the outskirts of La Paz, with stunning views down into its deep valley.

By the time we hit town it as basically dinner time and after that a long nap.
