This morning we did the city tour. First stop was the Valle de la Luna on the edge of La Paz. This is a really cool bit of erosion and nothing to do with Inca temples. Unfortunately we didn’t get to walk around it all.
We then drove back through the centre of La Paz to see the main square. On the square is the Cathedral, Congress and Government house all in colonial style and quite pretty. A walk up a couple of streets and we went to a gold museum. There is a really cool collection of gold relics from Inca and pre-Inca times, including head bands, jewellery, coins, ornaments, etc.
From there we drove up to a point for great views over La Paz.
Next was a drive through the market area and a stop and wander at the witches market. The witches market has a large variety of thing for everything you can think of. Dried llama foetus for good luck when you are building a new house, you bury it underneath.
Stone statues for fertility, health, wealth, luck, etc. Pack of ‘something’ for all types of ailments and desires. We stopped here for lunch and the rest went back to the hotel. After lunch we walked around a few of the tour agencies to see what trips there were to the amazon. We’ve booked three nights in the amazon a few days after this tour finishes. We are looking forward to it.
We went out for dinner with the group as it is out last dinner together. Six of them finish the tour today, and four of us continue to do stuff south of La Paz and we pick up a new traveller, a NZ bloke.
