This morning we were killing time and sorting some details on the net, sitting in a café just across the road from the airline office, not bad coffee and a good lunch and internet. Desperately hoping that our flight would leave, but sincerely doubting that it would, we’d pushed our connecting flights back with some lee-way and could always do so again. We really don’t want to spend another night here, but would survive. I’m going to relate how I saw what happened next, as my brain’s still full of squirrels frenetically chasing nuts around my brain.
Woman from airline walks over and says something in Spanish to the table next to us and then us, then an airline bloke walks up. We have a plane leaving now, it’s a 6 seater, we’ll take two from each table. Yes please. We were sitting by ourselves, the other table had four at it.
Pay bill, Tuna goes to the bano, I sprint across the road to the office.
Tuna comes in, reminding me we had laundry in down the road.
Sprinting, hand gestures, a seeming eternity (probably 5 minutes), yay laundry.
Sprinting, yells, Tuna’s on the back of a motor bike.
I’m on the back of a motorbike, my luggage is between the blokes knees, shit cobbled streets, back pack slipping down one shoulder, laundry bag straining, hope it holds, can’t see Tuna, bugger clouds of dust from a truck.
At the airport. Man running with my luggage, find Tuna demanding wallet to pay departure tax. Standing next to a plane, squirrels in head running around, seem happy, decide to go with it. Into plane, posh 6 seater prop.
My gosh it’s 50 degrees in here, sweating from every pore, and we’re off. Breathing again.
Brilliant views below, rivers, jungle, big mountains, the amazing basin of La Paz, airport. Sit, pause. Squirrels still running.
Book hotel online, into cab. Nice hotel.
Squirrels still running.
